Uploading your website

INTRODUCTION

When you transfer a file to your website the overwhelming chances are that you are using FTP to do so. It is a simple and almost universal way of moving files to and from the Internet

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. A protocol is a formalized way that computers talk to each other. FTP is the standard way that one computer (i.e. your home computer), will communicate with and move files to and from a remote computer (i.e. your Internet server). The benefit of having a protocol is that any computer running any operating system can talk to any other

In order to transfer a file, the FTP client needs three pieces of information. These are the location of the server that the web space is held on, the correct directory on that server and the password in order to access that directory

1) The first piece of information that your FTP client will need is the address of the server that you web space is held on. For our customers this address is www.yourdomain."xx.xx"

To put this in context, if one wanted to FTP to the domain www.crownedchild.co.uk the web server one would need to access would be www.crownedchild.co.uk

2) Once your FTP client has got to the web server it has to ask for the unique directory that is your web space. Your FTP client does this by giving the web server the username for the account. This will be the username that we supplied you. You have to remember that there will be a different username for every hosting account you have ordered because each one is a unique directory

3) The final piece of information that you need to supply your FTP client is the password. This is because the mail server will check that you have the authority to access the web space.

FTP clients often call these three pieces of information something different. The location of the Web server is sometimes called the "Host Name" or "Address". It doesn't matter which - you just need to type www.yourdomain."xx.xx"

The second piece of information will be called something like "User ID" or "Account Name". Here you need the username that we sent you for the domain

The last piece of information is always called the password. The FTP client will be able to connect to your web space and you will be able to move around directories from there.

INSTALLING WS_FTP

Perhaps the most popular and easy to use FTP client is WS_FTP from Ipswitch.

Click Here to purchase WS_FTP Professional

There is a very large selection of FTP software available, and some web page editors (e.g. Dreamweaver) have an in-built FTP system. Below are instructions for using WS_FTP. Most FTP software functions similarly.

USING WS_FTP

Open up WS_FTP program from your start menu

1) The first thing you'll see is a window called Session Properties. Click on the NEW button to clear all fields.
2) In PROFILE NAME type the title of your website. This can be anything you want.
3) In HOSTNAME type your domain name: www.YourDomain."xx.xx"
4) In HOST TYPE leave the setting as Automatic Detect.
5) In USER ID type the username we supplied you.
6) Type the password we supplied you, and then check the Save PWD box.
7) Click APPLY and then OK.

These details will be stored on your system, so you won't have to do this again. Next time you open the program you'll see this window with all the required details. Simply hit OK to get started.

8) Having hit OK you will be taken to the main screen and you will be prompted to go online. Wait for the dial-up to complete.
9) You will be faced with two screens which may look complex at first, but are actually simple to get a grasp of.
10) The screen on the left (Local System) is your home computer. The screen on the right (Remote System) is the internet server.
11) To find the file you wish to upload to the internet, you will have to locate it on your computer. For example, if the file is located in your My Documents folder, you will need to open the My Documents folder. In the top left corner of the screen is a green arrow. Double-click on this a couple of times until you get to your main C:\ hard drive. Then scan down the list until you see My Documents and double-click to open.
12) Having found your file in the left-screen you can either double-click it, or highlight the file and click the right-pointing arrow between the two screens. This will transfer your file to the internet
13) To download files from the internet to your PC is just as simple. Having opened the folder on the left screen where you wish to place the files, simply double-click a file from the right screen.
